[texts]Structure of hydrogen atom (preprint) Joseph George - Joseph George
Present-day atomic theory suggests that electrons are continually moving around the nucleus as electron cloud or matter wave. However, since there is no evidence for this kind of electron’s motion, the present-day atomic theory may not be accurate. Here I discuss an experiment, which involves the interaction of light with hydrogen gas, led to assume that, contrary to the present-day belief the electrons or nuclei which in the atoms of a medium have no role in the transmission of light through ...

[texts]Discrete-time Markovian stochastic Petri nets - Ciardo, Gianfranc
We revisit and extend the original definition of discrete-time stochastic Petri nets, by allowing the firing times to have a 'defective discrete phase distribution'. We show that this formalism still corresponds to an underlying discrete-time Markov chain. The structure of the state for this process describes both the marking of the Petri net and the phase of the firing time for each transition, resulting in a large state space...

[texts]ASCA Observations of the Unusual Binary LSI61 Deg 303 - Harrison, Fiona A.
We present simultaneous 0.5-10 keV X-ray and two-frequency radio observations at 2.25 and 8.3 GHz of the unusual binary system LSI61 deg 303. This system was observed twice in a single binary orbit by the ASCA satellite, and monitored daily at two radio frequencies during the same orbital cycle with the Greenbank Interferometer. During the first ASCA observation the source was detected with a 1-10 keV luminosity 3.6 x 10(exp 33) (d/2.0 kpc )(exp 2) erg/s and during the second at a similar level ...

[texts]A Light-Weight Inflatable Hypersonic Drag Device for Planetary Entry - McRonald, Angus D
The author has analyzed the use of a light-weight inflatable hypersonic drag device, called a ballute, (balloon parachute) for flight in planetary atmospheres, for entry, aerocapture, and aerobraking. Studies to date include missions to Mars, Venus, Earth, Saturn, Titan, Neptune and Pluto. Data on a Pluto lander and a Mars orbiter will be presented to illustrate the concept. The main advantage of using a ballute is that aero deceleration and heating in atmospheric entry occurs at much smaller at...

[texts]High Resolution X-Ray Explorer (HIREX) - Goulb, Leo
SAO is involved in a study to determine the feasibility of building an orbiting telescope capable of resolving 7 km structure on the Sun. In order to achieve the required imaging the telescope must have a resolution 0.01 arcsec. This fact challenges the state of the art of orbiting telescopes in several areas: Mirror Figuring; Optical Metrology; Optical Mounting; Mirror Figure Control; System Alignment; Optical Stability; Observatory Pointing; and Image Stability...

[texts]Leave taking and overtime behavior as related to demographic, health, and job variables - Arnoldi, L. B.
An intra-installation model is formulated that correlates demographic, health and job related variables to the various types and amounts of leave and overtime taking behavior of employees. Statistical comparison of composite health ratings assigned to subjects based upon clinical criteria and bio-statistical data show that those employees who take the most annual leave as well as sick leave are the ones that have the poorest health ratings; employees who put in the most overtime have also the po...

[texts]Comparison of Cirrus Cloud Models: A Project of the GEWEX Cloud System Study (GCSS) Working Group on Cirrus Cloud Systems - Starr, David O'C.
The GEWEX Cloud System Study (GCSS, GEWEX is the Global Energy and Water Cycle Experiment) is a community activity aiming to promote development of improved cloud parameterizations for application in the large-scale general circulation models (GCMs) used for climate research and for numerical weather prediction. The GCSS strategy is founded upon the use of cloud-system models (CSMs). These are ''process'' models with sufficient spatial and temporal resolution to represent individual cloud elemen...

[texts]Bethanechol-Induced Water Intake in Rats: Possible Mechanisms of Induction - Fregly, Melvin J.
Acute administration of the parasympathomimetic agent, bethanechol, at 2, 4, 8 and 12 mg/kg body wt, IP, induced drinking and increased urine output of rats in a dose-dependent fashion. The first significant increases in both water intake and urine output above that of controls occurred when 4 mg/kg was administered. The drinking and increased urine output in response to administration of 8 mg bethanechol/kg was inhibited by atropine sulfate (3 and 6 mg/kg, IP)...

[texts]Projection Moire Interferometry for Rotorcraft Applications: Deformation Measurements of Active Twist Rotor Blades - Fleming, Gary A.
Projection Moire Interferometry (PMI) has been used during wind tunnel tests to obtain azimuthally dependent blade bending and twist measurements for a 4-bladed Active Twist Rotor (ATR) system in simulated forward flight. The ATR concept offers a means to reduce rotor vibratory loads and noise by using piezoelectric active fiber composite actuators embedded in the blade structure to twist each blade as they rotate throughout the rotor azimuth...

[texts]A self-zeroing capacitance probe for water wave measurements - Long, Steven R
The wave probe developed at the Air-Sea Interaction Research Facility was designed to measure the surface elevation fluctuations of water waves. Design criteria included being linear in response, self-zeroing to the mean water level, having multiple operating ranges so that the instrument's maximum output could be matched to the maximum surface elevation over varying conditions, and be as noise-free as possible...
